Homestay

Students enrolled at Kelston Boys High School are required to be in homestay accommodation with local families as sourced by our contracted homestay agency in accordance with the Code of Practice guidelines.

The prospective homestay accommodation is inspected, the hosts are interviewed, their references are checked and for all household residents over ages 18 years, a police vetting is required.

Applications for homestay placement are matched with available Code compliant host families. Details of the host family selected for students are generally made known to them prior to arrival.
Homestays encourage students to be a member of their family – we hope the students will join in the family activities. Host families undertake to provide:
Ø Separate bedroom, fully furnished with bed, wardrobe, study desk, chair and reading light
Ø Full laundry service, all meals including a cut lunch during school (if required)
Ø Closely monitored supervision
On arrival at the airport, the student will be met by the Homestay Agency personnel, orientated and then taken to the homestay.

All students, their parents and their homestay hosts have the 24 hour telephone number of the Homestay Agency Directors. This contact is available in an emergency at all times. Every effort is made to ensure students are happy and settled. The Directors of our Homestay Agency are available to meet the students at School or in their office, should the need arise.

An “Extra Care Programme” is available and is provided by the Homestay Agency, for students under 18, Details available on request.

Homestay payments are made directly to the school. (Refer to the separate information sheet on fees and refunds). Should a family wish to designate a caregiver, this must be made known to the School on enrolment and consideration will be given to meet approval for this situation. Flatting is not permitted.

Designated Caregiver (DCG)

The parents of the student must fill out and personally sign a Designated Caregivers form when submitting an International Student Application. The School will decide if the caregiver will be verified as a Designated Caregiver and will ask for a police vet, further supporting information and/or evidence of nature of the close relationship or friendship.

The home of the proposed Designated Caregiver will be visited and assessed the same as for a homestay caregiver. The home will be visited subsequently to substantiate and verify the Designated Caregivers living situation.

At no time can a Designated Caregiver leave the student unsupervised overnight or for any length of time without firstly informing the School and seeking approval for a temporary caregiver to take their place. This will probably necessitate a new Designated Caregivers being appointed for the period, as per all Designated Caregiver regulations.

The Designated Caregiver arrangement cannot change until Kelston Boys High School is informed, and agrees to the change. The parents take full responsibility and accept the decisions made by their Designated Caregiver about the day-to-day requirements of their child and understand that Kelston Boys High School will make every endeavour to provide care and welfare of their child while studying in their school. Should you have any concerns regarding the welfare of your child Kelston Boys High School may refer your child to the relevant welfare authorities, or any other appropriate agency in New Zealand.
