"Provision for International Students

Compliance with the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students and the Provision of English Language Support.

Kelston Boys' High School is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (the Code) established under section 238F of the Education Act 1989.  This is a requirement of all schools that enrol international students in terms of the Act.  Schools are also required to provide English language support for their international students.

The school complies with all aspects of the Code.

Areas of good performance.

Organisation and development.  The effectiveness and viability of the provision for international students has been developed through:

  • the use of external advisory support to review and improve provision;
  • increasing the use of ICT to enhance marketing and communication;
  • regularly reporting progress in these areas to the principal and board; and
  • ongoing whole-staff professional development ot raise awareness of the needs of international students within the school;

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).  a high level of English language support is provided for students.  ESOL staff work collaboratively to support students in their study.  Staff carefully monitor students' English language development and focus on helping students to gain literacy credits at their respective levels of ability.  As a results, students are able to extend their language ability at appropriate levels.

Student well-being .  Effective systems are in place to ensure that student well-being is maintained.  Personnel maintain regular contact with designated caregivers and home-stay parents, and produce regular high quality newsletters.  International students spoken to by ERO during the course of this review report that they feel see supported and included in the school."

How old is the School?
Approximately 50 years old. It started in 1954.
How many students in the School?
About 1150. The School roll has been stable for many years.
Where do International Students come from?
Mainly from Asia and Europe.  However, students from any part of the world are welcome to apply.
Can I maintain my culture?
There are a number of opportunities.  Throughout the year individual cultures have celebrations, particularly at their festivals.  Students are encouraged to be involved in these.
Why should I choose to study at a boys only school?
Research shows that boys achieve better in a boy's only environment.  However, our sister school Kelston Girls College is just down the road and we share some academic courses and cultural activities.
Can I choose my own Homestay?
 No the School has it's own homestay company with many years experience.  You will live with a New Zealand family in a safe caring environment.
As well as academic courses can I follow my interests?
The school has a wide range of sporting and cultural co-curricular activities.  There should be something you would enjoy taking part in.  Internationalal students are encouraged to participate in shcool life.
Can I choose my academic subjects?
Yes, with guidance from the International Director, based on the subjects you have studied in your home country and your level of English.
