What is the ESOL Programme
The ESOL Programme has 4 classes:
  1. A beginner class for the student who have little English.  (0 - 500) basic words.
  2. A pre - intermediate class - consolidating first 500 words and building up to 1000 basic words.
  3. An intermediate class for the students who have had at least one year's college instruction in English (2000) words. NCEA Level one for students who have proved English acquisition at the 1000 word level.
  4. NCEA Level two / IELTS - preparation for senior students wishing to enter University.  You might have to be tested before you enter this class.

Does This Mean Me?
Most new students from overseas will be in one of these classes after an English assessment by the ESOL teachers. This is a short test of your reading, writing and speaking.

How Long Will I Be in This Class?
These classes follow a yearly programme and most ESOL students attend these classes as their regular English class.

After 2 or 3 years study in the ESOL Programme you may be ready to sit NCEA Level 2 and/or IELTS. You will need Level 2 Literacy if you wish to go to University

What Will I Do In ESOL Class?
You will be joining a group of students from all over the world. You will have time to settle in, adjust to “Kiwi” accents and culture and to learn the school routine.

You will build your knowledge of English, especially the English we need to speak and listen to every day at school.

When Do I Come To ESOL Class?
This will be part of your timetable. Most students come 8 periods every week. Some students attend less than 8 periods every week and a few students attend more.

The ESOL classes require a serious commitment from all its students. You are expected to be at class on time every day, not whenever you feel like it. There is homework every night which students are expected to do in order to keep up with the class.

What Do I Need To Bring To Class?
Stationery requirements –
There is no specific course book to buy. However, the students receive handouts regularly and need to keep them organised tidily in folders. Since work is often revised, the students must bring all their folders and handouts to class every day.

You will need:
  • One 40-page clear file folder for topic / activity sheets    or
  • One 20-page clear file folder for vocabulary lists (depending what class you are in)
  • One notebook to write in any other new vocabulary
  • One B5 Exercise Book
  • All pens, a ruler, an eraser etc., in a suitable pencil case
These can be purchased from the School Stationery Shop which is open every school day from 8.30 – 11.30am
